According to me, one of the biggest problem that humanity has to solve is the fact that our economies are dominated by the “profit logic”. Pollution, exhaustion of natural resources, social tensions, originate from this.
In my opinion, it is obvious that the world needs to change its modern theoretical economic system, if we want to avoid a third world war or a massive economic implosion and/or explosion (see the previous posts in this blog). We will present in this post the ways to change or better the present-day neo-liberal system according to the idea of “Basic income”.
Note : I am not an economist, my ideas are intuitive, coming from meditation and could be described as a macro-macro-economic view. For more information, you can look at the post “Universal basic income” in this blog. For more technical informations about the different ways to implement the Universal basic income you can search for the internet sites “basic income earth network (@basicincome.org)” and” global basic income foundation (@www.globalincome.org)”.
1) The basic income would give some money to the neglected basis of the economic and social pyramids described in the first posts of this blog. The people who will benefit from this basic income would buy things (food, water, shelter, technological devices like “eole water”, this wind turbine that produces water via a system of intern frigorifaction,…) to satisfy their basic needs.
2) The money, given by the national governments according to each national economic condition, would slowly go away from the basis of each pyramid and reach the upper levels of the pyramids. The higher the position in the pyramid, the more money you will get. The basic income would not destroy the delicate balances of each sector (agriculture, industry, services…), on the contrary, it would stabilize and strenghten these economic interactions. The very important notion of “work” present in our modern-day systems would be preserved. Moreover, the total human workforce would improve (it is better to work bellyfull and with the idea that your family is protected, than the contrary).
3) The huge monetary creation made by the governments would avoid the risks of global economic implosion (also called “recession”). But would it create inflation ? In my opinion, no. Indeed, rich people would become richer, but the pyramids’ basis would be protected.
What would the rich people do with so much money ? They would give money to the governments (taxes to finance collective projects), buy lands or properties, they could also invest this money in innovative projects… Inflation could appear in areas where production is low and consumption is strong (for example in under-developped countries), but consumption and production will slowly adjust themselves.
4) The governments would take back some of the money created via the basic income to finance collective projects. How would they get this money ? As it is done today, from income taxes, taxes on consumption (V.A.T), from taxes on particular items (excessive consumption of petrol, cigarettes full of harmful chemicals, items difficult to recycle, like plastics, chemical products…).
5) This basic income given (without any condition of race, religion…) to each human (of more than 18 years old) who wants it, would be given each month in a bank account and would be easily transformed in “real money” (notes, coins…). Each government would therefore create each month a kind of “fictive” money at the bottom of each national pyramid, but this money would slowly be directed to the top of each national pyramid. This system would be different from the communist logic. Money would represent a simple logic tool that would regulate inter-human economic relations. Therefore pyramids, work and economic stability would not disappear, on the contrary they would be strenghtened. Economic and productive innovation also would not be destroyed.
6) This basic income logic could be effective :
a) if there is a strong moral and philosophical basis (from the bottom to the top of each pyramid). See the previous posts.
b) if we produce strong items that could last during years to avoid recycling problems.
c) if the ecological logic is integrated to the economic logic (see the previous posts).
d) if humanity slowly goes toward the aim of a vegetarian humanity (see the post “vegetarianism”).
Note :
1) according to some economic thinkers, giving money to poor people would create big over-population problems. I don’t agree with this (see the post “over-population and totalitarianism” in the first posts).
2) We have to rethink all our economic theories according to the Basic income and ecological logic.
